Women's March on Washington

womens march.jpg

Dear Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Advocates,

On Saturday, you marched with us!

You joined nearly 5 million women, men and children at the Women's March in Washington D.C. and in sister cities & towns around the globe. We marched for our right to live without fear of gun violence in our daily lives. We marched because too many of us know firsthand that guns don't make us safer.

Today, as Donald Trump signs his Executive Orders that take away women's rights and damage our environment, we are asking you get to know your three Members of Congress (MoCs) and send them a "HEAR OUR VOICE" postcard!

Former congressional staffers who witnessed the rise of the Tea Party created the INDIVISIBLE GUIDE to help activists fight for our issue (s) during Trump's Presidency. We will share these strategies with you to promote our efforts to #EndGunViolence.

We ask you to put pressure on your three Members of Congress (MoCs) — your House Representative and two Senators. Even MoCs who support your issue (s) need to hear from you so that they can adequately represent you.

1. "Begin with these five steps to gather intel. Before anything else, take the following five steps to arm yourself with information necessary for all future advocacy activities.

  1. Find your three MoCs, their official websites, and their office contact info at www.callmycongress.com

  2. Sign up on your MoCs’ website to receive regular email updates, invites to local events, and propaganda to understand what they’re saying. Every MoC has an e-newsletter.

  3. Find out where your MoCs stands on the issues of the day — appointment of white supremacists, tax cuts for the rich, etc. Review their voting history at VoteSmart.org.Research their biggest campaign contributors at OpenSecrets.org

  4. Set up a Google News Alert (http://www.google.com/alerts) — for example for “Rep. Bob Smith” — to receive an email whenever your MoC is in the news.

  5. Research on Google News (https://news.google.com/news) what local reporters have written about your MoCs. Find and follow them on Twitter, and build relationships. Before you attend or plan an event, reach out and explain why your group is protesting and provide them background materials and a quote. Journalists on deadline — even those who might not agree with you — appreciate when you provide easy material for a story"

2. Participate in Women's March on Washington's 10 Actions in 100 Days FIRST ACTION by sending "HEAR OUR VOICE" postcards to your three Members of Congress.

Download your printable postcards at home here or professionally here

Write a postcard to your three Members of Congress about why gun violence prevention and other issues matter the most to you - and how you’re going to continue to fight for it in the days, weeks and months ahead.

You can go it alone, or consider inviting some friends, neighbors and fellow Marchers over for a drink or dinner sometime in the next ten days to talk about your experience and fill out your postcards.

Sign Up to Help Us Deliver Coalition Gun Violence Prevention Letters to Congress!

On the 4th Anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting, we will hand-deliver the following letter to all members of Congress.

Please sign up here to join us at St Marks Episcopal Church at 1:00pm on Wednesday, December 14th and/or December 15th to deliver these letters to Congress.

Address: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church | 301 A Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003

December 14, 2016

Dear Senator or Representative _______:

December 14, 2016 is the four-year anniversary date of the devastating Sandy Hook shootings. We continue to mourn the senseless loss of 20 innocent children and their educators on December 14, 2012. We also mourn the loss of 120,000 other Americans who have been killed with guns since that tragic day.

The brutal shootings of 20 children and six educators should have been enough for Congress to take swift action to reduce gun violence. It is tragic and shameful that the House of Representatives has not yet voted on a gun violence prevention (GVP) bill and the Senate has rejected the GVP bills three times in the last four years. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey’s (R-PA) bipartisan Senate Amendment 715 to S.649 to require background checks on gun sales, was defeated 54-46 on April 17, 2013 after the Sandy Hook shooting and defeated once again by 50-48 margin on December 3, 2015, the day after the San Bernardino shooting. Senator Chris Murphy’s (D-CT) Amendment 4750 to H.R.2578 to require background checks on sale of all guns, was also defeated 55-44 on June 20, 2016 after the senseless Orlando Pulse Night Club shooting.

Annually, over 33,000 Americans die from gunshots and another 80,000 American are getting injured by gunshots. Congress has shamefully done nothing to close the dangerous loopholes in our nation’s gun laws to keep Americans safe from gun violence.

We are a coalition of families of victims, survivors, and gun violence prevention groups from across this great nation representing over 22 million supporters from every state and we are collectively imploring you to support the following bills to end gun violence in our nation:

CLOSE THE LOOPHOLES & EXPAND BACKGROUND CHECKS TO THE SALE OF ALL GUNS:

Senate: Re-introduce, vote on, and support Senator Chris Murphy’s (D-CT) Senate Amendment 4750 to H.R.2578, which is the text language from Senator Charles Schumer’s bill, S.2934, “to ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the national instant criminal background check system and require a background check for every firearm sale”.

House: Cosponsor, vote on, and support companion language such as Rep. Jackie Speier’s (D-CA 14th District) Bill from the 114th Congress: H.R. 3411: the Fix Gun Checks Act of 2015.

For more information on why an expanded federal background check bill should be supported: https://cdn.americanprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/BackgroundChecks-factsheet3.pdf

According to Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, “Background checks keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people like felons, domestic abusers, and the severely mentally ill. According to FBI data, the Brady Law has blocked more than 3.0 million gun sales to prohibited people since it went into effect in 1994.”

Numerous polls consistently demonstrate that more than 90% of Americans support universal background checks.

BAN ASSAULT RIFLES AND HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES:

Senate: Introduce, vote on, and support a Senate companion to Representative David Ciciline’s (D-RI 1st District) bill H.R. 4269 to ban assault weapons and limit high capacity magazines.

House: Cosponsor, vote on, and support reintroduction of Representative David Cicilline bill H.R. 4269 to ban assault weapons and limit high capacity magazines.

REPEAL THE 2005 PROTECTION OF LAWFUL COMMERCE IN ARMS ACT (PLCAA):

Senate: Cosponsor, vote on, and support reintroduction of legislation like Senators Richard Blumenthal’s (D-CT) bill in the 114th Congress, S. 2469 - A bill to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act to eliminate the special legal protection that shields the firearms manufacturers and dealers from being held liable when crimes have been committed with their products. For the last decade, PLCAA has provided the corporate gun industry special legal protection that is not enjoyed by any other industry in America.

House: Cosponsor, vote on, and support reintroduction of companion legislation by Rep. Adam Schiff, [D-CA-28] of H.R.4399 - Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act.

For more information on the harmful effects of PLCAA: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/guns-crime/report/2016/01/15/128949/immunizing-the-gun- industry-the-harmful-effect-of-the-protection-of-lawful-commerce-in-arms-act/

ALLOW THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC), AS WELL AS OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES, TO AGGRESSIVELY CONDUCT RESEARCH ON GUN VIOLENCEPREVENTION:

Dedicate funding for the CDC to support gun violence prevention research and begin to reverse the chilling effect caused by the Appropriations amendment first authored by Rep. Jay Dickey (R-AR) in 1996, also referred to as the Dickey Rider, which continues to practically limit the CDC and other federal agencies from directing public funding toward reducing gun injuries and deaths in America in any significant way equal to the challenge by taking a public health approach to studying it.

For more information on why gun violence research should be encouraged and funded without such destructive appropriations riders, go to: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/guns- crime/report/2016/03/09/132894/removing-barriers-and-reinvesting-in-public-health-research-on-gun- violence/

It is past time for Congress to do its job to keep all Americans safe from gun injuries and death. We demand a vote on these common sense measures to end gun violence in our nation.

About Sandy Hook Promise - Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. We are led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012 that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and 6 educators. Sandy Hook Promise is focused on preventing gun violence (and all violence) BEFORE it happens by educating and mobilizing parents, schools and communities on mental health and wellness programs that identify, intervene and help at-risk individuals. SHP is a moderate, above-the-politics organization that supports sensible non-policy and policy solutions that protect children and prevent gun violence. Our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation. Make the Promise at www.sandyhookpromise.org.

About Under The Gun: From award winning journalist / bestselling author Katie Couric and director Stephanie Soechtig comes, UNDER THE GUN, a critically acclaimed, stirring and insightful film about America’s love-hate affair with guns. Couric and Soechtig—the team responsible for Fed Up, which looked at the food industry and the alarming spread of childhood obesity—examine why, despite the increase in deaths at the hands of guns and the outpouring of shock and outrage that comes with it, our nation has failed to respond with meaningful action. The Epix Original Documentary, which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, followed by a limited theatrical release, will be available on Digital HD and On Demand on May 31 from Lionsgate. Learn more at www.underthegunmovie.com

About Wear Orange--In 2013, a small group of teens at a South Side Chicago high school asked their classmates to honor the life of their murdered friend Hadiya Pendleton by wearing orange – the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others and a color that reflects the value of human life. They inspired the Wear Orange campaign (wearorange.org), a coalition of more than 200 non-profits, cultural influencers and elected officials working to reduce gun violence in America. Spearheaded by Everytown for Gun Safety, the campaign asks Americans who believe we can do more to save lives from gun violence to do one simple thing on June 2, National Gun Violence Awareness Day: Wear Orange. Those who wear orange pledge to honor the lives of Americans stolen by gun violence, to help keep firearms out of dangerous hands and to protect our children from gun violence. Wear Orange has already reached more than 220 million people worldwide and is fast becoming the symbol of the gun violence prevention movement.

Gun companies continue to profit from bloodshed and tragedy. But there is an even darker truth to gun violence: Your 401k may be invested in the irresponsible gun industry. Unload your 401k to stop investing in a future of gun violence: www.unloadyour401k.com #UnloadYour401k

While 51 million Americans have a 401k, many do not know that the money they are using to plan for retirement may be invested in a future of gun violence.

Since Columbine more than 1.4 million people have been killed or injured by guns. Congress has failed to act and gun companies continue to profit from these tragedies. Could your 401k be helping to fuel gun violence in the US?

Gun companies continue to profit from bloodshed and tragedy. But there is an even darker truth to gun violence: Your 401k may be invested in the irresponsible gun industry.

Gun companies have not responded to the moral imperative to act to prevent gun violence and continue to profit from our tragedies. They do, however, respond to financial incentives: Unload your 401k of the gun industry. www.unloadyour401k.com #UnloadYour401k

Article and video of visit to Senator Manchin: http://www.theday.com/article/20130614/MEDIA0101/130619768

Join Us In Washington, D.C.

It has been six months since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Since then, thousands of Americans have died from gun violence, the casualties grow every day, and there has been no action from Congress to pass what the majority of Americans support – universal background checks to save lives and make our communities safer.

In honor of the 26 lives lost on December 14, 2012, and the more than 4,500 lives lost since that day, Newtown Action Alliance is planning a series of events on Thursday, June 13 as follows:

  • Post & Tweet In Unison Thunderclap Crowd Sourcing Event: At 9 a.m. a coordinated Twitter/Facebook message will launch simultaneously on all participant pages/feeds. Use the Twitter hashtag: #SixMonthsNoAction
  • Speak Directly To Congress Throughout the day, a Newtown Action Alliance contingency will hand-deliver to members of Congress a list of gun violence victims and a letter signed by gun violence prevention alliance partners across the country demanding universal background checks.  To have your organization sign onto these letters sign up here
  • Remember The Victims Starting at 9 a.m., there will be a “No More Names” (www.nomorenames.org) reading of all the victims lost to gun violence since 12/14. At noon, people from Newtown will read the 26 names of the children and educators lost that day.
  • Human Green Ribbon of Remembrance After the 26 names are read, all of us, wearing green, will assemble to create a powerful visual and symbolic image. Together we will stand for a moment of silence to honor all victims lost to gun violence before, since and on 12/14.

Schedule Details

If you are planning on attending the NoMoreNames reading and/or helping to form the Human Ribbon of Remembrance at the Capitol tomorrow, please also join us for a press conference with key lawmakers at noon in the Capitol Visitor Center - Room SVC 201. Details and Schedule below:

WHAT: A press conference and public demonstrations to mark the six-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and to demand congressional action on gun reform.

WHO: Speakers at the press conference will include: • Jillian Soto, sister of Victoria Soto, who hid her students and then was shot and killed confronting the gunman in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown • Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) • House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) • Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) • Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) • Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) • Rep. Peter King (R-NY) • Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA)

Marathon Monday Monday, April 15th is Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, and is also the day runners from all over the world compete in the famed Boston Marathon. As advocates for gun safety, we are also running our own marathon to bring awareness gun related issues and legislative change. This Monday the 15th, greater Boston area NAA representatives will be engaging spectators along the Boston marathon route, to circulate our message by passing out flyers, pins and stickers. They are also planning to gather at least 200 signatures for letters that have been drafted, urging Governor Patrick to help bring about needed change in Massachusetts. What a terrific way to extend the Newtown Action Alliance message beyond Connecticut.

The letters are as follows:

The Office of Governor Deval Patrick
Massachusetts State House
Room 280
Boston, MA 02133

Dear Governor Patrick,

I am writing to you today to ask for your support of Bills S.1126, S.1120, S.1116 and H.3253 proposed by Senator Creem, Senator Chang-Diaz and Representative Linsky. These Acts propose comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation and are respectful of the Second Amendment. They do not affect the ownership of rifles and shotguns commonly used for hunting and they do not require the confiscation of any type of weapons.  These important Acts address:

-  Universal background checks for all gun purchases, including private sales

-  A strengthened background check system

-  A suitability standard for all gun licenses, with discretion for local licensing authorities

-  Prohibition of military assault weapons and high-capacity magazine clips

-  Stronger penalties for gun-related crime, including failure to report lost and stolen guns and trafficking of firearms

Like millions of Americans from across the country, I believe more has to be done to reduce the daily tragedy of gun violence and deaths.  I believe that these laws will be effective at stemming the growing problem of gun violence in the Commonwealth and make Massachusetts a safer place to live and raise our families.

I urge you to join me in supporting these acts of legislation as well as other common sense solutions to the increasing problem of gun violence in our State.

Sincerely,

NEWTOWN ACTION ALLIANCE CALL FOR CITIZENS TO JOIN DEMONSTRATION AT NATIONAL SHOOTING SPORTS FOUNDATION HQ

Newtown - We are entering the most critical period for legislative action to curb gun violence nationally, and in Connecticut. At the same time, the gun lobby is pulling out all of the stops to fight any change from the status quo. They won’t even support universal background checks, something that the vast majority of Americans, including gun owners support. This includes the National Sports Shooting Foundation, the second largest gun lobby, headquartered here in Newtown.

It is such a critical time that our friends at Mayors Against Illegal Guns have declared this Thursday as National Demand Action Day. As such, we will join the growing number of Newtown residents who have been demonstrating in front of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) over the last few weeks. We call on all concerned citizens who are tired of politicians catering to the gun lobby to bring their signs and join us to demonstrate in front of the NSSF’s headquarters (11 Mile Hill Rd.) this Thursday, March 28th at 4:30pm. Come and demand that our lawmakers listen to their constituents, and not the special interests like the NRA and the NSSF.

WHAT: Demonstration

WHEN: Thursday, March 28, 4:30pm

WHERE: National Shooting Sports Foundation Headquarters, 11 Mile Hill Road, Newtown, CT (Park single file, on Tinkerfield Rd., across the street).

WHO: Anyone who wants their lawmakers to put the needs and safety of their constituents before those of the gun lobby.

Come hear Chris Kocher plus learn of opportunities to help

Come welcome Chris Kocher from Mayors Against Gun Violence on March 19th. We had the pleasure of being with him on our recent DC Trip, and his subject matter knowledge is incredible. Learn more about what the mayors are doing at ground zero for gun violence. In addition, the Newtown Action Alliance will have a number of opportunities to talk about that you can help with.

Chris and I will celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary. We usually mark this date by getting a baby sitter and going out for a nice meal and spending some alone time together. Instead, tomorrow we will be headed to Vermont with our girls Amanda and Hannah and a number of good friends. Our marriage has certainly had its highs and lows, challenges and celebrations, just like everyone else, but it has been an amazing 19 years that I wouldn't trade for anything.
