White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention

After years of advocacy from the grassroots GVP movement, President Joe Biden established the first of its kind, the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention (WHOGVP) on September 21, 2023.

Vice President Kamala Harris led the office along with long time Joe Biden staffer Stefanie Feldman as director, and gun violence survivors Greg Jackson and Rob Wilcox as deputy directors. Sarah Wiener joined the office as a policy advisor.

The WHOGVP was tasked with four key responsibilities:

  • Coordinating the federal response to mass shootings and concentrations of community gun violence;

  • Expanding state and local partnerships to help reduce gun violence;

  • Developing and implementing executive actions on gun safety to save lives; and

  • Implementing the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) and other federal gun violence prevention laws.

Members of Newtown Action Alliance and Jr Newtown Action Alliance met with the WHOGVP many times since inception.

The office was disbanded on January 20, 2025 on Donald Trump’s inauguration day.
