Newtown Action Alliance Endorses Gubernatorial Candidates & Incumbents Who Support Assault Weapons Ban and Safe Firearm Storage

Newtown, CT - For 2022 Midterm Elections, Newtown Action Alliance (NAA) is proud to endorse gubernatorial candidates & incumbents who support assault weapons ban, safe firearm storage, and other lifesaving gun laws.

For 10 years after a 20-year-old gunman with an AR-15 and high capacity magazines killed 20 children and six educators in Sandy Hook Elementary School, NAA has been advocating for a set of bold and comprehensive gun control legislation - including assault weapons ban - to dramatically reduce all forms of gun violence in our nation.

In 2019, NAA  joined a coalition of gun violence prevention survivors, advocates, and researchers from across the country at the GVPedia Conference in Denver, Colorado to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Columbine shooting, and to forge a path forward to a safer America. From this assembly the Denver Accord was born, a declaration of guiding principles and policies to end the scourge of gun violence in America.

NAA has fully endorsed GVPedia’s Denver Accord principles that acknowledge 1) Guns do not make us safer; 2) Gun violence in America is a pervasive public health crisis that demands substantial policy solutions and well-funded programs that effectively reduce gun violence; 3) Equitable and just enforcement of gun laws is paramount; and 4) Everyone has the right to live free from violence.

NAA will continue to urge all governors to fully support the Denver Accord. Meanwhile, NAA is endorsing gubernatorial incumbents and candidates who support legislation to ban assault weapons to keep weapons of war away from school and mass shooters, Ethan’s Law to #KeepKidsSafe from unsecured guns, and other lifesaving gun laws.

The NRA has been working for three decades on its “any guns to everyone everywhere” agenda by loosening state gun laws to allow gun owners to carry guns without permitting requirements, arming school/mass shooters with weapons of war, and blocking safe storage and child access prevention laws. Now, the incidents of mass shootings and the number of gun deaths are rising and guns are now the number one killer of our children. More and more NRA-backed governors have signed permitless carry laws and now 25 states (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming) allow gun owners to carry guns without permits, which puts more Americans at risk for gun deaths and injuries.

Since Sandy Hook, there have been nearly 4,000 mass shootings and over 350,000 Americans have been killed by guns and the following Senate candidates have honored all victims of gun violence with action and commitment to end the gun violence public health crisis in our nation.

There are less gun deaths in states with strong gun laws therefore we need governors who will prioritize strengthening the state’s gun laws.
